Early Morning Gardening

Yesterday I did something very out of character… I woke up early. It’s been awhile since I’ve put some gardening time in and my only free daylight hours these days tend to be when I’m asleep, so I took advantage of the beautiful morning and weeded the beds, thinned the vegetables, ate a deliciously sweet carrot, and took some pictures.

Now that the winter is upon us it will be harder and harder to find daylight hours to meet, and there’s also not as much work to be done to merit a work party, so I encourage anyone who has a spare 30 minutes to swing by the garden and do a little weeding, thinning, and even harvesting. The carrots are just about ready! Here are a few carrots I pulled in the name of thinning:

The onions have taken off:

The beets aren’t faring as well – I think this bed may need to be moved from under the tree since bugs are clearly dropping from above and eating everything alive:

Kale seems to be doing well but I’m worried about the impending cold. Should we try to craft some covers over our baby plants?

Our neighbors at Meany might be on to something…

The strawberries haven’t done much but they haven’t died either, so I’m taking that as a good sign!

Anyone who wants some Swiss Chard should help themselves – it’s definitely on its last legs. And don’t be shy about pulling up a carrot, brushing off the dirt, and enjoying it while sitting on one of our new benches.

Happy 11-11-11!

Garden Benches

Thanks to the Parks Department, several of our garden beds now have sturdy benches attached to them, as modeled by official Miller CC Garden mascot Domino:

This is one of many ideas we have to make the garden more community-friendly. If you’re in the area, stop by to take a load off. And hey, feel free to do some weeding/thinning while you’re there.

The next brilliant idea is so much fun we want to tell you about it RIGHT NOW, but you’ll have to wait until it’s ready to find out what it is. Watch this space…
